The JDP Way of Feeding Dogs: Understanding Our Food Pyramid

The JDP Way of Feeding Dogs: Understanding Our Food Pyramid

By Jason – Just Dog People

Over the last decade, I can’t tell you how many dog owners I’ve worked with regarding their dogs’ nutritional needs, problems, and hurdles.

One of the reasons I’ve been able to help so many is because of my experience owning a dog store. I get to learn from—and help—thousands of dog owners from all walks of life, with different breeds and vet approaches.

What does that mean for our customers? They get access to all that real-world insight. Think of it like a life hack: I can condense years of experience into a 60-minute food consult that helps get your dog’s diet back on track fast.

To explain the basics of dog food, I created a tool we use to teach both customers and staff—the Just Dog People Dog Food Pyramid.

What Is the Just Dog People Food Pyramid?

The JDP Food Pyramid is a simple visual to help customers and employees better understand dog food categories. It outlines four major tiers of dog food—each with different levels of nutrition, processing, and quality.

From bottom to top, the tiers include:

  • Kibble – dry food, most common, often most processed
  • Wet/Canned – higher moisture, moderate processing
  • Dehydrated/Freeze-Dried – less processed, shelf-stable
  • Raw/Gently Cooked – most biologically appropriate, least processed

Here are a few fast facts to keep in mind:

  • ⬆️ Going UP the pyramid = less processed, more real food
  • ⬆️ More meat, fewer fillers
  • ⬇️ Lower cost, but often more carbs/sugars
  • ⬆️ Higher quality = less need for meds & better long-term health

This Isn’t About Perfection—It’s About Progress

I would never shame anyone for what they feed their dog. Our goal is to help owners make better-informed decisions—one small improvement at a time. You don’t need to switch to raw overnight. Just start where you can.

The pyramid isn’t a rulebook. It’s a flexible guide to help you better understand what your dog is eating—and how to upgrade their nutrition in a way that fits your budget and lifestyle.

And yes, it also helps explain why some dogs are “picky eaters.” It’s not always about taste—it could be about quality and nutrition.

Over the next few posts, we’ll go deeper into each tier of the pyramid:

  • The truth about kibble: convenience vs. health
  • Wet/canned food: is it actually better?
  • Freeze-dried & dehydrated: worth the upgrade?
