The JDP Food Pyramid – Raw, Gently Cooked & Biologically Appropriate Foods

The JDP Food Pyramid – Blog 5: Raw, Gently Cooked & Biologically Appropriate Foods

By Jason – Just Dog People

We’ve reached the top of the JDP Food Pyramid—the level that represents the most biologically appropriate way to feed your dog: raw, gently cooked, or real whole foods. This is where I see the most dramatic transformations in energy, skin, digestion, and longevity.

After 9 years and helping/speaking with thousands of dogs and dog-owners, I can most certainly tell you—THIS is optimal feeding for MANY dogs. (not all—please read that again—many, NOT ALL)

The History of Raw Feeding

Before kibble and cans, dogs ate raw meat, bones, and scraps from human meals. Remember, ‘kibble’ was created in 1904 by the Fromm family. Dogs are roughly 30,000 years old—so they’ve only eaten kibble for about 120 years!

The concept of a ‘biologically appropriate’ diet gained traction in the 1990s with the BARF movement (Bones and Raw Food). Today, raw feeding has evolved with accessible commercial options like patties and gently cooked subscriptions.

Understanding the Misconceptions

Raw feeding is often misunderstood. No, it’s not just slapping a chicken breast into a dog bowl. Commercial raw diets at JDP are balanced, inspected, and designed for your dog’s nutritional needs.

Fun Fact: The meat we eat usually goes through one FDA inspection. Raw pet food is often inspected multiple times before hitting our shelves.

What is “Gently Cooked”?

Gently cooked diets are a sub-category of raw—perfect for those who want the benefits of real food but are hesitant about raw. We used this for our Sheltie, Zoe, in her later years with great success.

Why Pet Parents Choose Raw or Gently Cooked

  • Species-appropriate: Dogs are designed to eat meat, bones, and organs—not cereal.
  • Highly digestible: Smaller stools, more nutrient absorption.
  • Moisture-rich: Supports hydration, kidneys, and skin.
  • Visible results: Shinier coats, cleaner teeth, more energy.
  • Fewer additives: No fake colors, flavors, or fillers.

Things to Consider

  • Handle with care: Raw meat requires safe prep.
  • Balance is key: DIY raw meals may lack nutrients.
  • Storage space: Requires fridge or freezer capacity.
  • Cost: Real meat is more expensive than kibble.
  • Vet skepticism: Some vets still don’t support raw diets.

The JDP Perspective

We’re huge fans of real food—done right. Personally, I’ll never feed anything other than raw or gently cooked. We started JDP because raw food changed Zoe’s life. It’s not for everyone, but when done properly, it works wonders.

There’s a reason we say, “Welcome to the club” when someone makes the switch!

Final Thoughts: The Pyramid Is a Path

The JDP Food Pyramid is about better choices—not guilt. Whether you’re just starting or ready for the top, we’re here to help guide your journey with support, clarity, and compassion.
