32 College Mascots That Are Dogs – And Some Fun Facts!
Being that we’re, well… Just Dog People, we always enjoy seeing four-legged fur-balls (live or in costume) on the sidelines of some of our favorite sporting events.
The other day I was curious how many colleges used ‘Dogs’ as their mascots… and well, down the hole I went! Don’t worry, I made it back to share this useless, yet fun, knowledge with you!
Fun Facts About College Dog Mascots
- English Bulldogs dominate the field – 13 schools use them as mascots.
- Siberian Huskies, Saint Bernards, and Boston Terriers each appear at 2–3 schools.
- Unique breeds include Bluetick Coonhound, Tamaskan, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Dalmatian, and more.
- The oldest mascot on record is Handsome Dan from Yale (introduced in 1889).
- At least 7 dog mascots are live dogs with documented lineages.
Furry Legends: Fun Mascot Stories
Smokey (Tennessee) once escaped from his handler mid-game and ran down the field during a play—earning MVP status from fans.
Zeke the Wonder Dog (Michigan State) became a legend by catching frisbees at halftime. His successors still train to maintain the title.
Griff (Drake University) gets his own social media team and delivers “therapy” on campus—complete with hoodies.
