32 College Mascots That Are Dogs – And Some Fun Facts!

Being that we’re, well… Just Dog People, we always enjoy seeing four-legged fur-balls (live or in costume) on the sidelines of some of our favorite sporting events.

The other day I was curious how many colleges used ‘Dogs’ as their mascots… and well, down the hole I went! Don’t worry, I made it back to share this useless, yet fun, knowledge with you!

English Bulldogs dominate the field – 13 schools use them as mascots.
Siberian Huskies, Saint Bernards, and Boston Terriers each appear at 2–3 schools.
Unique breeds include Bluetick Coonhound, Tamaskan, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Dalmatian, and more.
The oldest mascot on record is Handsome Dan from Yale (introduced in 1889).

Furry Legends: Fun Mascot Stories

Smokey (Tennessee) once escaped from his handler mid-game and ran down the field during a play—earning MVP status from fans.

Zeke the Wonder Dog (Michigan State) became a legend by catching frisbees at halftime. His successors still train to maintain the title.

Griff (Drake University) gets his own social media team and delivers “therapy” on campus—complete with hoodies.
